Comparing Narrative techniques;
First person narrative
Neither primary narrators have primary involvement in the narrative.
Both narrators are ambivalent(conflicting emotions) towards the protagonist
In Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte;
- Has two narrators Nelly and Mr Lockwood, both have no true part to the narrative.
Thus creating a biased account of the plotline.
Nelly tells the story through a gossip way.
-Lockwoods especially is biased as he has it on account of himself and nelly.
His narrative is in diary form which makes it especially opinionated.
Which changes from beginning and end.
In Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald;
- Has only one narrator, Nick Carraway.
Not a true main character to the plot
Yet he is truly involved with all of the main characters.
Characters;
The main character in the Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby, goes through the plot wanting to achieve the 'American Dream'. Whereas in Wuthering Heights the main character show Victorian society and how society leads to segregation which is also the foundation of marriage.
Tom's love seems to be selfish whereas
Heathcliff VS Gatsby:
Heathcliff is primitive and Gatsby is not
Heathcliff is taken in by a family and Gatsby makes his own way.
Times;
Wuthering Heights was set and written in a time when women were completely oppressed. Men were totally superior and worked for their wives to live on that money.
The Great Gatsby was set and written in a time when women were allowed to work, own property and divorce and just had been allowed to vote. They also had looser morals as were shown by their new shorter dresses and shorter hair.
